Separation

This is ordinarily a pre-cursor to divorce. To get a divorce in Oklahoma you have to have lived in Oklahoma for 6 months. To be legally separated you have to have lived in Oklahoma for 30 days. So what happens is a person files for legal separation in Oklahoma after they've lived here 30 days, then they amend their petition to ask for a divorce once they been here 180.

Anyway, a legal separation will do everything a divorce will do except grant the decree of divorce: child custody and support, property division, alimony, &c.

If you've been in Oklahoma for less than six months, this is the first step to get a divorce.
